Very Reverend Father Maximos Constas, PhD

The V. Rev. Maximos Constas is Distinguished Professor of the Humanities at the University of Austin, Texas. He was formerly Professor of Theology at Harvard University, and Professor Patristics and Orthodox Spirituality at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. He was tonsured a monk on Mount Athos, where he lived for many years at the Monastery of Simonopetra. He is the author of numerous books, articles, and translations. His work encompasses the theology of the Church Fathers; the patristic interpretation of Scripture; the Philokalia and Orthodox spirituality; modern Greek Orthodox Elders; and the theological study of Byzantine art, icons, and iconography. His most recent book is a critical edition and translation of the tenth-century Life of the Virgin Mary by John Geometres (Harvard University Press, 2023); and in 2024 he launched a new translation series, “The Philokalic Library: The Kollyvades Fathers in Translation,” of which two volumes have appeared (Newrome Press, 2024-).
